An erect, branched annual with striate stems and 2–3-pinnately divided leaves. Small white flowers form compound umbels, yielding ovoid, muricate, aromatic greyish-brown fruits with distinct ridges and a tubercular surface.
Applications & Uses
Valued for its potent aroma and digestive properties, ajwain seeds are used whole or ground across breads, savouries and traditional preparations, and in indigenous medicine as a carminative.
